How to Become a Medical Assistant

Although you might be excited about the prospect of going to school to earn a medical assistant certification, if you are a typical person you may also have a little apprehension, especially if you have never gone to college or it has been years since you went. It is important to know that the top medical assistant schools now offer online coursework so you can complete your education for any number of medical assistant jobs from home. That way, there is no need to worry about fitting in, finding your way around a campus, buying new clothes for school, etc.

Of course, you could attend a traditional campus if wanted but medical assistant schools online have become one of the more popular methods for earning this type of certification. For some reason, some people believe that going to school for medical assistant jobs through an online school means sacrificing on quality of curriculum but in truth, as long as the schools you are considering are accredited and approved through certain government agencies, there is no difference.

The only thing you would find is that most medical assistant schools cost less than brick and mortar educational institutions. For one thing, online schools do not have the same overhead so they can afford to offer better pricing but in addition to that, online schools do not separate tuition into an in and out of state pricing structure. For this reason, if cost were a concern, choosing among top rated medical assistant schools online would be the ideal means of earning the required certification for this type of career.

Several different types of medical assistant jobs exist that fall under two primary categories. First, there are Medical Assistants or MAs and second, Certified Medical Assistants or MCAs. Within these two groups are different medical assistant employment opportunities, some that deal solely with administrative functions of a doctor’s office, clinic, or hospital, and others that handle administrative tasks along with clinical responsibilities. Although the majority of medical assistant jobs are in doctor’s offices, this type of career has quickly spread to professional clinics and hospitals.

For medical assistant employment, you would need to complete two educational programs. The first is a one-year program that yields medical assistant certification and the second is a two-year program that would result in you earning an Associate’s degree. Once the two-year degree has been earned, you would be able to apply for more versatile jobs, which equates to better medical assistant salary. Once you get to this point, the most important thing is to choose from accredited schools, those with approved medical assistant programs.

Although there would be differences in curriculum between a one-year medical assistant certification and a two-year degree, both would share some of the same coursework. For instance, both would include education on medical terminology, science, math, first-aid, medical billing, insurance, communications, and physical anatomy. To earn the two-year degree, you would be required to complete the medical assistant certification first. Once you begin the Associate’s degree, curriculum would become more involved.

As a part of the process, once you finish the medical assistant certification you would then be able to take the certification examination to become a certified medical assistant, a test offered three times each year. After a successful completion, this certification would need to be renewed every five years. Remember, you could work a number of medical assistant jobs without a certification or degree but medical assistant pay and advancement opportunities would be limited. Therefore, if you were serious about this type of career, it would be worth the investment of time to earn the Associate’s degree.

With a medical assistant certification or Associate’s degree completed, you would then secure a job and begin your new career. As a medical assistant, you would schedule patients, check them in upon arrival for appointments, file charts, bill insurance, etc. If you have completed the necessary coursework to be a clinical medical assistant, additional tasks would include taking vital signs, ordering certain laboratory tests under the doctor’s orders, administer medication, and even give shots.

Working in medical assistant jobs allows you a set 40-hour per week schedule in most cases, Monday through Friday. Of course, if you were to go to work for a doctor, clinic, or hospital that provides patient care after hours or on the weekend for urgent care, your schedule might change. Between the versatility, opportunity to work with and for people, advancement opportunities, and good medical assistant pay, it is no wonder that this type of career is among the fastest growing at present time.
