The other option is to take a two-year program which will provide you with an associate’s degree at the end.

Before you start looking for medical assisting colleges, be aware that you must enroll in a career college that is accredited. Accreditation means that the school has been given the stamp of approval by a higher organization. In this case it is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). It is CAAHEP that does the accrediting of colleges for Allied Health. What this means for you is that you will be getting the best education possible from the best medical assisting college around. Always make accreditation a top priority when you are researching medical assistant schools to attend!

A medical assistant will be required to take a number of courses that are math and science oriented. Some of the course work will include medical terminology, medical billing, first aid and many more. There are lots to learn to become a medical assistant.

Once you have successfully completed the MA program you can then apply to take the certification examination which will then give you the designation of CMA. The American Association of Medical Assistants makes the exam available to qualified candidates three times throughout the calendar year. Once you receive your certification it must be renewed on a five year basis. While some employers will not deem it a requirement for medical assistants to be certified, those with the certification will find that they have more employment opportunities available to them if they do have it.
