A medical assistant (MA) or a certified medical assistant (CMA) is an important part of the medical team in doctors’ offices, clinics and hospitals. The medical assistant helps doctors and nurses with a selection of medical responsibilities as well as administrative duties. The MA often is assigned clerical work that the physician does not have the time to get done. Medical assistants also do their share of administrative tasks such as sorting paperwork, medical billing, insurance coding and keeping proper medical records. These individuals also work closely with patients by taking vital signs, taking notes in medical charts, etc. A job in this field is very versatile because you can work in any number of medical specialties.

Educational Requirements

In order to become a medical assistant and attend a medical assistant training school, you must have graduated from high school. There are two kinds of educational medical programs for those wishing to work in this field. Some schools for medical assistants offer a one-year certificate program. The other option is to take a two-year program which will provide you with an associate’s degree at the end.

Before you start looking for medical assisting colleges, be aware that you must enroll in a career college that is accredited. Accreditation means that the school has been given the stamp of approval by a higher organization. In this case it is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). It is CAAHEP that does the accrediting of colleges for Allied Health. What this means for you is that you will be getting the best education possible from the best medical assisting college around. Always make accreditation a top priority when you are researching medical assistant schools to attend!

A medical assistant will be required to take a number of courses that are math and science oriented. Some of the course work will include medical terminology, medical billing, first aid and many more. There are lots to learn to become a medical assistant.

Once you have successfully completed the MA program you can then apply to take the certification examination which will then give you the designation of CMA. The American Association of Medical Assistants makes the exam available to qualified candidates three times throughout the calendar year. Once you receive your certification it must be renewed on a five year basis. While some employers will not deem it a requirement for medical assistants to be certified, those with the certification will find that they have more employment opportunities available to them if they do have it.

For some reason, some people believe that going to school for medical assistant jobs through an online school means sacrificing on quality of curriculum but in truth, as long as the schools you are considering are accredited and approved through certain government agencies, there is no difference.

The only thing you would find is that most medical assistant schools cost less than brick and mortar educational institutions. Within these two groups are different medical assistant employment opportunities, some that deal solely with administrative functions of a doctor’s office, clinic, or hospital, and others that handle administrative tasks along with clinical responsibilities. Although the majority of medical assistant jobs are in doctor’s offices, this type of career has quickly spread to professional clinics and hospitals.

For medical assistant employment, you would need to complete two educational programs. The first is a one-year program that yields medical assistant certification and the second is a two-year program that would result in you earning an Associate’s degree. Once the two-year degree has been earned, you would be able to apply for more versatile jobs, which equates to better medical assistant salary. Once you get to this point, the most important thing is to choose from accredited schools, those with approved medical assistant programs.

Although there would be differences in curriculum between a one-year medical assistant certification and a two-year degree, both would share some of the same coursework. For instance, both would include education on medical terminology, science, math, first-aid, medical billing, insurance, communications, and physical anatomy. To earn the two-year degree, you would be required to complete the medical assistant certification first. Once you begin the Associate’s degree, curriculum would become more involved.

As a part of the process, once you finish the medical assistant certification you would then be able to take the certification examination to become a certified medical assistant, a test offered three times each year. After a successful completion, this certification would need to be renewed every five years. Remember, you could work a number of medical assistant jobs without a certification or degree but medical assistant pay and advancement opportunities would be limited. Therefore, if you were serious about this type of career, it would be worth the investment of time to earn the Associate’s degree.

With a medical assistant certification or Associate’s degree completed, you would then secure a job and begin your new career. As a medical assistant, you would schedule patients, check them in upon arrival for appointments, file charts, bill insurance, etc. If you have completed the necessary coursework to be a clinical medical assistant, additional tasks would include taking vital signs, ordering certain laboratory tests under the doctor’s orders, administer medication, and even give shots.

Working in medical assistant jobs allows you a set 40-hour per week schedule in most cases, Monday through Friday.
